BroadwayCon, Here I Come!
While Winter Storm Jonas coated the Big Apple in layers of ice and snow, BroadwayCon was just starting to heat up at New York’s Midtown Hilton. Although the weather may have canceled all Broadway performances that Saturday, it didn’t keep the 3,000+ patrons of the first ever BroadwayCon from having a blast.
From January 22 to 24, musical theater fans were treated to a number of planned—and unplanned—activities, including a freestyle rap from HAMILTON’S Lin-Manuel Miranda, a moving performance from Waitress composer Sara Bereilles, photobooth and autograph sessions—with Broadway stars, such as Jonathan Groff, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and Lesli Margherita—and a 20th-anniversary-panel for RENT with original cast members Anthony Rapp, Daphne Rubin Vega, and Adam Pascal.
During the blizzard, BroadwayCon implemented impromptu “Blizzard Programming,” which included a solo cabaret performance by Krysta Rodriguez, who took requests and performed numbers from SMASH, In The Heights, and Spring Awakening. Other stars—who were grounded due to the winter storm—were called in through the “Blizzard Party Line.” Fans were graced with an intimate Facetime session with Jeremy Jordan, and also chatted with other notables, such as Betty Buckley, Patti LuPone, and Idina Menzel—just to name a few.
Along for the ride were two SHN Members who won a trip to BroadwayCon as our guests. Hear what they had to say of their BroadwayCon 2016 experience, below.
“BroadwayCon was quite magical! I have been attending the theater for years, and thoroughly enjoying it, but not really understanding or thinking about all that is required to make it happen.
BroadwayCon provided a number of theater-related activities, panels, autograph sessions and photo-ops. One of the first panels I sat in on was “The Untold Stories of the Palace Theatre.”It was moderated by Jennifer Ashley Tepper, a young woman who wrote the book, Untold Stories of Broadway. I was fascinated by the tales of the performers who played at the Palace. I am eager to read her books.
I was impressed by the spontaneity of the attendees (they broke out in song in the hall) as well as the guests. During the sing-a-long, the moderator encouraged the audience to join him on stage. The young people were so joyful.
It was such a wonderful site. Spirits were not dampened by the snow storm. All in all, a supercalifragilisticexpialidocious weekend. Thank you SHN for the opportunity to be part of the magic.”

“My wife and I were so excited to have won the trip to BroadwayCon. We have never won anything before. We had a fabulous time at the first ever BroadwayCon despite the ‘Blizzard of 2016.’
The crowd was full of costumed fans of various plays including Cats, Phantom, Wicked, Hamilton, and others. The energy was amazing… thousands of theater geeks all in one place. Everyone was friendly and excited to be there. Fans were from all over the country.
Our favorite event was the panel with the eight Hamilton cast members, including Lin-Manuel Miranda. His free-style wrap at the end had the crowd standing for him and his incredible talent. Just prior to that panel was a memorable crowd rapping “Guns and Ships” from the show. It was unbelievable!! It is wonderful that San Francisco will be the site of the first Hamilton touring production.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to be a part of this new theater fan tradition.”
